Our canyoning spots in the Rhône-Alpes region: where should we go?

Ah! You’re certainly spoiled for choice. Here in Rhône-Alpes, the canyoning spots are among the most beautiful in the Alps: waterfalls that have been carving the rock for centuries and hidden gorges that you can happily explore for hours on end. Welcome to the refreshing side of the Alps!

Canyoning is the art of letting yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the rivers. Walking through rushing streams, rappelling down waterfalls, sliding down natural water-smoothed slides, and joyfully jumping into deep, ultrablue pools… In short: you trade your everyday routine for a healthy dose of adrenaline and laughter. What could be better? (Not us.)

Between Haute-Savoie, Savoie, and Isère, each valley has its own unique atmosphere. Some boast spectacular Alpine waterfalls (so cool). Others hide wilder, more rugged, almost secret canyons… One thing is for sure: you’re going to have a great time!

Canyoning in Haute-Savoie: The “Yaute”—Postcard-Perfect and Thrilling

Where canyoning looks like something out of a postcard. Just imagine: lush green forests, rushing streams, and cliffs several meters high. All of this, not far from Mont Blanc. It’s enough to make you dream of getting away, isn’t it? Keep your eyes peeled—you’re in Haute-Savoie (or “la Yaute,” as we say around here).

If you’re a big fan of water, you’re in luck: the canyons here often feature plenty of water. A real refreshing boost for everyone! Okay, we’ll admit it, the water is “just a tiny bit cold”—which means you’re guaranteed to wake right up the moment you dip your first toe in. But young and old alike will love playing with the elements of the earth. And there’s something for every skill level! The canyons of Angon, Montmin, Pont du Diable, and Chéran (near Annecy) are especially eager to show you their landscapes.

Nestled between the Bornes, Aravis, and Bauges mountain ranges, this is the perfect setting for combining adventure with stunning Alpine scenery.

Intimate Savoie: Between Sculpted Cliffs and the Secret Gardens of the Alps

A little further down, toward Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry, other gorges emerge in the mountains. These canyons wind peacefully between cliffs, mountain streams, and wild valleys. Quite intimate, one might say. The atmosphere there is more rugged, more vertical at times, giving the impression of entering a hidden world in the heart of the Alps.

We’re big fans of the limestone massifs of the Bauges and the Chartreuse, so we chose—and thoroughly explored—their canyons! Nature as far as the eye can see, impressive rock formations, and astonishing erosion patterns… We feel right at home there. So much so that we’re sharing these spots with you—from rocky passages and rappelling descents to waterfalls echoing through the gorges. Plus, there’s something for everyone! Some routes are gentle and fun, while others require a bit more energy… and some solid leg strength.

The Grenant and Ternèze canyons, as well as the Groin Canyon (near Chambéry), will take you on some incredible adventures!

L'Isère Sauvage: Head to the Vercors for a 100% nature adventure

The thrill of the great outdoors in Isère. Let’s head down to Grenoble to explore the wonderful nearby canyons! The wild and unspoiled beauty of alpine canyoning, set amid dense forests, fast-flowing rivers, and limestone cliffs… Raw nature just the way we like it.

Do more than just take a quick trip to the Vercors, this limestone mountain range full of wonderful surprises. We set out on a “fun adventure” to discover the coolest canyons to explore. Mission accomplished, with varied descents and a lively atmosphere! We jump, swim, slide, and navigate natural obstacles one after another in a relaxed atmosphere. Here, the terrain loves to surprise you: a waterfall hidden behind a bend, a narrow passage between the walls, or a perfect pool to splash the whole group (“oops!”).

We especially love the Versoud and Ecouges canyons, which offer that fantastic mix of thrills and adventure as we float down the river. And often, at the end, we find ourselves thinking, “When are we going back?”
